Running is a skill, just like learning to ride a bike or play the piano. As with any skill, the key to good running technique is practice, practice and more practice. But how do you know you are practicing the right way? How do you know you are not out, pounding out the kilometres in training with a poor technique? It does not matter whether you are an experienced runner or a complete novice, having an efficient running technique is the key to successful training. Good technique will help you improve your running economy and reduce your risk of injury. Poor technique may leave your frustrated, injured, in pain and not enjoying your running.
If you answer yes to any of these questions then you should consider having your running technique assessed:
If you answer yes to any of these questions then you should consider having your running technique assessed:
- Do you have a running injury?
- Would you like to improve your running performance?
- Are you starting out on a new training program?
- Do you like the idea of running but when you try it, you find it difficult and tiring?
- Do you find running unenjoyable?
- Do you want to run with greater efficiency?
The starting point for all running technique training is the assessment. This is where a video is taken of your current running stride and then analysed using high speed video software.
In addition, your unique biomechanics, strength and flexibility will be assessed to hunt for weaknesses and muscle imbalances that make it difficult to adopt a good technique.
Once your running pattern and biomechanics have been assessed a program of corrective techniques and exercises can be employed. The end goal of your assessment and coaching is that you have the tools and techniques to run well, consistently and happily with the right technique.
Your running technique analysis includes:

"I have had pain in the front of my knees when I run for as long as I can remember. I have tried strength training, had scans, massage - nothing has ever really helped and I thought maybe it was just me and that I had dodgy knees. I heard about running technique through Dave's blog and decided to give it a go. He took a very thorough history of my training and my injuries, going back to old injuries that I had almost forgotten about. He then filmed me running and explained how the way I run was putting lots of pressure on my knees. After he had taught me the new running technique I was amazed at how quickly my knee pain went away. It took some practice to get used to the new technique, but I did the session with him 6 months ago and have been pain free in my knees for nearly that whole time. Highly recommended" - Sarah, Gold Coast.
